so a follow up to this post regarding "race fail 09"

http://alumiere.livejournal.com/313755.html

there are some amazing things going on over at foc_u today

i strongly urge you to check it out if you are as much of a geek as i am... the stories are awesome, the commentary is intelligent and thoughtful

it's really sad that this community came into being as a result of so much bad behavior from professional writers, editors, etc - but i for one am glad that it's here and hope to be able to read it all eventually

I am somewhat confused: The group is protesting a lack of characters of color in what genre, now?

Will have to look into this after work..curious..
5/21/09 19:20 (UTC) - damn - ok this is the best summary i can give
this whole mess started when a white writer of sf/f wrote a how to for white authors to write poepole of color (POC) - not a bad start, but she got some things wrong and some of her books handle POC less than well and POCs called her on it

this turned into a huge flame war that's still ongoing with among other things white editors for sf/f press saying that there aren't books by/about POC because there aren't any good writers of color, the fans don't exist, that the books that are out there (and racist and/or misappropriate POC tradition and religion - ie: voodoo=dead chickens; native american=earthy crunchy hippy; etc) are just fine and more doesn't need to be said/written

some authors of pallor (AOPs) said that by just attempting to write POC they are doing a service; that the POC who criticize the mistakes are overreacting; that they can't be racist because they had a best friend who was black as a child, etc

the particular comment from a well known AOP that FOC (fans/fen of color) didn't exist until the internet because so few attend sf/f conventions is what prompted the creation of the FOC_U group - many FOC said they don't attend cons because they find their concerns ignored or brushed off, that the environment is racist (and sexist - a lot of the FOC are women), and that they have no desire to spend a small fortune to attend a convention and be marginalized and mistreated

so there you have a very brief summary of the whole mess; for some good links to the various threads and posts see http://fiction-theory.livejournal.com/116708.html, http://rednikki.livejournal.com/1363937.html and http://sparkymonster.livejournal.com/316365.html including the links to the earlier summarys if you're really interested

and fwiw, i totally agree that cons can be sexist as hell; i can only imagine what it would be like to add racism on top of that and how unwelcome it would make me feel
